The Board of the BFA met last Friday. We discussed a number of issues, including the $48 fix – the income-tax surcharge that will reset state support of UC to the year 2000 level; the situation of the Library; and the ongoing Strategic Planning Process. In response to the latter, we developed a memo, laying out the BFA’s priorities for the future of the campus under three headings: shared governance, education and research, and advocacy for the public university. We noted that these issues were not directly addressed in the framework of the Strategic Planning Process.
Last week we also learned that last semester’s debacle over “Free Speech Week” was far from free – the cost was $3.9 million. That’s four times the proposed reduction in the library budget.
