There has been a remarkable new development on our campus: the formation of a Chairs’ Forum that emerged from the various crises of the last two years. It has the support of the current Chancellor and the Senate leadership. Inspired by a similar organization at UCSD, the purpose is to create a forum for lateral discussion of common concerns and issues by the approximately 60 chairs across campus. Its first meeting took place last semester. Among other matters, this semester the Forum seeks to participate in campus strategic planning. Chairs are in the best position to judge the real impact of budget cuts and to work together in the interest of the campus as a whole. Nathan Sayre, firstname.lastname@example.org, chair of Geography, is serving as the convener of the Forum.
Last week one of our undergraduate students was detained by US Border Patrol. He is a Colombian who does not fall under DACA because he came after 2007. The campus administration and Feinstein’s office are reported as trying to lend the student support. See below.
