While DACA continues to be a sticking point in Congress, Chancellor Christ sent out a warning that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is planning to arrest undocumented individuals in Northern California. UCOP has prepared a document to help us determine what we can and cannot do if ICE comes on campus.
The Chancellor continues to promote dialogue with the campus community: open meetings with the top university administrators – Rae, Alivisatos, Fisher and the Chancellor herself. Last Friday, at very short notice, the Free Speech Commission held the first of its public hearings which will continue the morning of February 5 and the afternoon of February 9.
Still, when it comes to Free Speech, the administration seems more concerned to protect the rights of off-campus provocateurs than the rights of faculty subject to anonymous complaints from students. Is the university more intent on brand protection (for funders) and consumer satisfaction (for students) than supporting a more open environment where creative thinking can flourish?
