2017 was year of reckoning, a year when the university came under assault from right-wing provocateurs as well as from Congress. The graduate tuition tax and the repeal of the deduction of the interest payment on student loans may not have survived Congressional reconciliation, but the very proposals point to mounting hostility to universities. UCOP didn’t do us any favors with its own public relations debacles. Accusations of sexual harassment continue to swirl around the campus. In 2018, what efforts can we make in turning the tide in favor of the university? How shall we cope with the budgetary squeeze that is daily degrading our education? If 2017 was a wake-up call, how shall we defend what we stand for in 2018?
