It may be dead week on campus, but there’s plenty of life in Washington. Read Wendy Brown’s excoriation of the GOP Tax Bill, delivered at the rally last Wednesday. The taxation of tuition waivers, if it goes through (since it’s not in the Senate Bill) will be just one more nail in the coffin of the public university, leading to fewer graduate students, less research, poorer instruction for undergraduates. Can the news get worse? Well, yes it can: the House version’s elimination of the state income tax deduction would likely end in the further reduction of state contributions to public universities….
