The fallout from UCOP’s interference in a state audit has begun, as two executives with a hand in directing individual campuses to alter their responses to an official inquiry resigned. One of the executives, UCOP Deputy Chief of Staff Bernie Jones, wrote emails instructing three campuses to change responses to the state auditor’s confidential survey. His boss, UCOP Chief of Staff Seth Grossman, who was copied on the emails, also resigned. Email records obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle indicate UC President Janet Napolitano was aware of the interference.
An investigation into the interference by an outside law firm at the behest of the UC regents is pending.
In other news, the embroiled Berkeley College Republicans elected a new leader, who says the student club will shift away from inviting controversial alt-right figures to campus, instead embracing more traditional activities like voter registration. The Daily Cal ran a story detailing a 1980s rape allegation by a student against a visiting professor, Franco Moretti, who is a professor emeritus at Stanford. Keeping alive a controversy stemming from a retracted Daily Cal editorial cartoon, Alan Dershowitz, the subject of the cartoon, wrote an op-ed published on Fox News’s website about the incident.
